Description

M100 is a grand design spiral galaxy located in the Virgo Cluster about 55 MLY's away.  Its diameter is  107,000 LY's and was discovered in 1781 by Pierre Mechain and was observed 29 days later by Charles Messier and entered in his catalog.  M100 is considered a starburst galaxy with the strongest star formation activity taking place near its center.
